Wolf Pack Win In Overtime March 8, 2005 By MARTIN RENZHOFER, Special To The Courant WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah -- Hartford had a golden opportunity Monday night to pull into a tie with Manchester for the Atlantic Division lead. For a while, it looked as if the Wolf Pack might have to wait for first place. However, Jeff Hamilton scored on a power play at 4:16 of overtime to give Hartford a 3-2 victory over the Utah Grizzlies. It was Hartford's second power-play goal of the game. "We tried to set that up, trying to expose one side," Hamilton said. "We needed it. We've been struggling to score goals 5-on-5." It was Hamilton's eighth game-winner, tying him for second in the league, two behind Chuck Kobesaw of Lowell. Hartford (39-19-2-2) had to kill a penalty in the final minutes of regulation to get to the five-minute overtime. A high sticking call on Dana Lattery of Utah (16-39-0-4) gave the Pack the advantage in overtime. "We feel like we're in a playoff game every night," Wolf Pack coach Ryan McGill said. "The division is so tight, we have to keep pace with all the teams. We're learning down the stretch we have to bring our best game every night." The Wolf Pack were tested throughout as each side took turns controlling the action. Hartford outshot the Grizzlies, 33-26. Hartford came from behind twice. Jed Ortmeyer's pinpoint pass from the left boards found Ryan Hollweg streaking down the middle. Hollweg one-timed the puck to tie the score 2-2 at 8:12. The Grizzlies led 2-1 after two periods but the Wolf Pack nearly tied it with a minute to play in the period. Utah's Randall Gelech was sent to the penalty box for tripping. On the ensuing faceoff, Hartford center Layne Ulmer raced in all alone on Grizzlies goalie David LeNeveu, who stopped Ulmer's chest-high shot. Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Kiel McLeod. Although the Pack hadn't taken many shots, they had the Grizzlies bottled up in their end for much of the period. The score energized Utah, which began to crowd Hartford goalie Steve Valiquette late in the first 20 minutes. However, the Wolf Pack took advantage of a power play to score a tying goal early in the second period. Dominic Moore, camped near the crease, wristed a rebound past LeNeveu. The Grizzlies regained the advantage midway through the period on Erik Westrum's goal. |
